Heringssalat (Herring Salad)
Heringssalat, meaning “herring salad,” is a common side dish in Germany that represents the core flavors and style of the national cuisine. Many different varieties of herring can be used in this recipe, but many Germans contend that the true taste of heringssalat requires pickled herring. This tart and tangy salad is a perfect start to a meal when paired with either a rustic crusty bread or crackers.
